Activitatea zilei de 5 decembrie a fost o continuare a zilei anterioare, când am produs propriul nostru compost.
De dimineață, echipele proiectului au împrăștiat compostul pe straturile special pregătite la școală și toți participanții au fost încântați să vadă produsul finit și cum se poate materializa. Pentru elevii noștri a fost fascinant să-și “murdărească” mâinile și să îmbine cunoștințele teoretice cu cele practice.
Următoarea activitate a constat în fabricarea săpunului din materiale proprii. Elevii au lucrat în laboratorul de chimie al prestigiosului “Bilim Koleji” și au învățat cum să combine diverse substanțe pentru a da săpunului o anumită consistență, culoare sau miros. Încântarea a fost la cote maxime, mai ales când ne-am spălat pe mâini cu ce am realizat noi înșine. Satisfacția a fost pe măsură.
După-masă gazdele noastre ne-au pregătit o altă activitate la fel de interesantă: producerea de hârtie din materiale reciclabile care s-a desfășurat la Istanbul Modern Museum. A fost un proces migălos și laborios: dupa ce hârtia rudimentară se macină bine, se amestecă cu apă și se toarnă într-un vas larg de unde se ia cu o sită. Apoi se pune la uscat pentru a absorbi umiditatea. Lucrul cu mâinile oferă o satisfacție aparte și este foarte reconfortant știind că poți avea un impact benefic asupra mediului înconjurător.
Restul timpului l-am petrecut vizitând expozițiile permanente și temporare de la Istanbul Modern Museum. A fost o adevărată călătorie în culori, insule plutitoare, simfonii de sunete și plăceri vizuale ce încanta simțurile si inima deopotrivă. Pe lângă tablourile pictorilor contemporani, expoziția se mândrește și cu fotografii ale artiștilor fotografi mai mult sau mai putin cunoscuți.
Ziua s-a încheiat cu o scurtă escapadă la mallul din apropiere și apoi o plimbare pe jos spre Galata Tower unde adolescenții și-au săturat pofta de Starbucks într-un oraș al cafelei tradiționale. Fascinați de țipătoarea lume a neoanelor din vitrinele magazinelor ultra-moderne dispuse de-a lungul unui bulevard pietruit cu secole în urmă, ne-am luat rămas bun pentru încă o noapte de la străvechiul oraș aflat la răscruce de drumuri. Mâine, călătoria noastră în lumea islamică se va încheia.

December 5th was a sequel of the previous day when we produced our own compost.
Early in the morning, our teams distributed the compost over the garden beds that had been specially prepared by the school and all the participants were delighted to see the end product and how it was materialized. For our students it was fascinating to get their hands „dirty” and to combine theoretical knowledge with the practical application.
The next activity consisted in manufacturing soap out of our own substances. The students worked in the chemistry lab of the prestigious „Bilim Koleji” and they were taught how to combine different chemicals to give the soap a certain consistency, colour or scent. Their delight reached a climax especially when we got to wash our hands with the soap we made ourselves. The satisfaction matched the working process.
In the evening our hosts prepared an equally interesting activity: the manufacturing of paper out of recyclable materials which took place at Istanbul Modern Museum. It was a painstaking and toilsome process: after the rudimentary paper is finely ground up, it is mixed with water and poured into a large container and then drained really well. Afterwards, it is placed to dry on a towel so it absorbs all the moisture. Working with your hands provides a certain kind of satisfaction and it is highly comforting knowing you can have a beneficial impact on the environment.
The rest of the day was spent visiting the permanent and the temporary exhibitions at Istanbul Modern Museum. It was a genuine voyage of colours, floating islands, sound symphonies and visual delights that enchants the senses and the soul alike. Apart from the paintings of contemporary artists, the exhibition prides itself on the pictures of photographers that are more or less known to the public.
The day ended with a short outing at the nearby mall and then a walk to the Galata Tower where our teenage boys and girls feasted on a cup of Starbucks in a city of traditional coffee. Fascinated by the gawdy world of neon lights in the ultra-modern shopping windows placed along a boulevard that was stone-paved centuries ago, we said our good-byes for yet another night to the ancient city at the crossroads. Tomorrow, out trip in the Muslim world will end.
